The Power of Pensions: Your Best Tax-Saving Weapon

Pension contributions are one of the most effective ways to save for the future and reduce your tax bill today. The government rewards you with tax relief, meaning it costs you less to save more. Use the simulator below to see how it works.

Smarter Benefits: Salary Sacrifice

Salary sacrifice allows you to exchange part of your gross salary for a non-cash benefit, like an electric car or extra pension contributions. This reduces your taxable income, saving you both Income Tax and National Insurance. It’s a win-win for you and your employer.

Example: Electric Vehicle (EV) Scheme

The government offers huge tax incentives for electric cars. By sacrificing salary to lease an EV through your employer, the cost is taken from your pre-tax pay. Compare the tax impact of a £40,000 car for a 40% taxpayer below.

Petrol Car (149g/km CO₂)

  • Cycle to Work: Save up to 47% on a new bike and accessories for your commute.
  • Pension Salary Sacrifice: Both you and your employer save on NI contributions, potentially boosting your pension pot even further.
  • Workplace Nursery & Tech Schemes: Access valuable benefits in a tax-efficient way.

Unlock Your Personal Allowances

The UK tax system has specific reliefs for people in certain situations. Many of these go unclaimed simply because people don’t know they exist. Explore the options below to see if you qualify.

What is it? A way for a lower-earning partner to transfer £1,260 of their unused Personal Allowance to their spouse or civil partner.

The Benefit: Reduces the higher earner’s tax bill by up to £252 for the 2025/26 tax year.

Who Qualifies? You must be married/in a civil partnership. One partner must earn less than £12,570, and the other must be a basic-rate taxpayer.

How to Claim: The lower earner applies online at GOV.UK. You can backdate claims for up to 4 years.

What is it? An extra tax-free allowance of £3,130 for 2025/26 if you’re registered as severely sight impaired.

The Benefit: Increases your total tax-free income. If you don’t have enough income to use it, you can transfer the entire allowance to your spouse or civil partner.

How to Claim: Contact HMRC to have it added to your tax code.

Personal Savings Allowance (PSA): Allows you to earn some savings interest tax-free. For basic-rate taxpayers, it’s £1,000/year. For higher-rate, it’s £500. Additional-rate taxpayers get no allowance.

Dividend Allowance: You can receive up to £500 in dividends from investments outside an ISA tax-free each year.

How it Works: These are usually applied automatically. Tax on amounts over the allowance is collected via your tax code or Self Assessment.

Claiming Tax Relief on Work Expenses

If you spend your own money on things you need for your job, you may be able to claim tax relief. Remember, claims can be backdated for up to four years, potentially leading to a significant refund.

If you pay annual fees to a professional body approved by HMRC (like the GMC for doctors or IET for engineers) and it’s relevant to your job, you can claim tax relief on the full cost.

You can’t claim for the initial cost, but you can claim for the cost of repairing, replacing, or cleaning specialist work clothing (e.g., a branded uniform or protective gear). Many jobs have a flat-rate allowance you can claim without receipts.

Important: You can no longer claim this if you simply choose to work from home. You can only claim if you are required to work from home because your employer has no office or you live too far away to commute. If eligible, you can claim a flat rate of £6 per week.

For claims under £2,500 per tax year, you can claim online using a P87 form through your Government Gateway account. For larger claims, you’ll need to file a Self Assessment tax return.

Building Wealth & Supporting Your Family

A smart tax strategy goes beyond your salary. Use these government-backed schemes to grow your savings tax-free and manage family costs more effectively.

Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs)

Your £20,000 annual allowance lets you save or invest without paying any tax on interest, dividends, or growth. It’s a “use it or lose it” allowance and the cornerstone of tax-efficient wealth building.

Tax-Free Childcare

For eligible working parents, the government will top up your childcare payments. For every £8 you pay into your online account, the government adds £2, up to £2,000 per child per year.

Gift Aid on Donations

When you donate to charity, they can claim back the basic-rate tax. If you’re a higher-rate taxpayer, you can personally claim back the difference, making your generosity even more cost-effective.
